STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) -- A weather alert system that has notified Oktibbeha County residents about severe weather in their area since 2008 is expanding.

The Oktibbeha County Emergency Management Agency announced Thursday the addition of a smartphone app for the Alert FM system.

The apps are available for Apple iOS or Google Android devices.

The system notifies residents of weather warnings, school closings, evacuation notices, road closures and other critical information through Alert FM receivers.

Oktibbeha County EMA Director Jim Britt says the same information will be included on the app.

The ALERT FM App can be downloaded for free from both the Apple iTunes and Google Play.

Upon the initial launch, users will need to input the zip code so that you can receive local Oktibbeha County alerts.
