Lauderdale Emergency Management Agency is working to install about 900 Alert FM radios in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and government buildings around Lauderdale County.
The effort is made possible by a $145,000 grant from FEMA.
LEMA director David Sharp installed and tested a radio in the lobby of the courthouse annex in downtown Meridian.
Sharp says it's important for those in public places to receive proper warning in the event of an emergency.
"You know, a lot of people come to these buildings and they don't have any way of getting emergency messages when they come out," said Sharp.
Sharp says what's good about this particular radio is it can receive alerts for only your county, as opposed to a region.
The radios are available at Hooper Electronics in Meridian.
